I like school. Now that I said that...
Today was a rough day at school. If you don't already know I am currently knee deep in the Computer Information Systems degree. Most of the classes up to this point have been pretty easy for anyone who has been messing with PC's for most of their adult lives. Most of the classes were about how the computer works and configuring settings and all that kind of stuff. They were easy A's but at what cost. In a lot of these classes we used Google more than the teacher actually taught us. Don't get me wrong I like spending time on Google figuring things out for myself to troubleshoot a problem I have but not when I am paying to be taught how to do it without having to look it up.
So a year into the program and we are in the core classes and they are kicking my ass. All of the theory we were being taught should have prepared us for what we would be getting into but they did not. I can't stress that enough. I would say about 80% of the class feels the way I do. We have bonded over this but it's driving a few of us to think about dropping out. The reason we are having such a hard time is a bit about not being prepared but most of it could be remedied by a good teacher. The program has adopted a new pattern for teaching which is not to teach. They even flat out told us that a lot of what we would be doing outside the course would be having to figure it out on our own. "You won't be able to raise your hand in the workplace and have someone come over and help you" said one of my teachers. I get his point but I am not in a workplace and he should be teaching me how to do it so I don't have ask later but instead they are just sitting at their desks watching us all struggle. We raise our hands and they come and say stuff like oh you're close or that's not at all right and just walk off.
This type of teaching is frustrating and I really wish I wasn't paying for it. The end of the lab today the four of us just looked at each other and shook our heads. We all attended the lectures and read the book but still fumbled around with cables and settings not knowing what we are really doing, even though we got it to work, we still were all a little lost.
I guess I just needed to vent. I really wish I could write or talk to someone about how these classes are being taught and since they are changing curriculum around so much to expand and get more money they have been using certain classes as test subjects for what words and doesn't work. We are not getting all they we should. I just want to learn things damn it, I'm f
